Thousands of Australians could miss out on a $500 government handout

Tens of thousands of struggling Australians could miss out on a $500 government handout unveiled in the Federal Budget.

The government announced a third and fourth one-off Economic Support Payment of $250 to eligible Australians progressively from December 2020 and March 2021.

The $250 payments will 'provide financial support' for aged and disability pensioners, veterans, people on carer payments and family tax benefit recipients.

Australians who have the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card and Pensioner Concession Card are also eligible.

'This affects approximately five million customers who get one of the following payments, as at 27 November 2020 and/or 26 February 2021,' the government said.

But National Seniors Australia have shared concerns some eligible retirees could unknowingly miss out on the cash injection.

'National Seniors hears from many self-funded retirees who are concerned they are missing out on any stimulus payment yet are heavily impacted by the downturn in the economy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,' they said.

National Seniors urged self-funded retirees to see if they are eligible for the CSHC card, to ensure they receive the payment.

To get the card, single Australians must have an income below $55,808, while couples must be below $89,290.

There are about 400,000 CSHC holders who should benefit from the payment.
