Terminally ill man is granted dying wish to see his dementia-sufferer wife of 60 years for last time

A husband terminally ill with cancer has fulfilled one of his dying wishes to see his wife of almost 60 years for one last time.

Derek Oliver, 84, used to visit his wife Eirwen, 85, who has dementia, at her care home in Pentre, Rhondda Cynon Taff, in South Wales every day.

However he was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the start of this year and became bed-bound stopping him from visiting Eirwen.

The couple's son, David, has been trying to organise a private ambulance to take his father to see Eirwen one last time.

However none of the private companies he contacted had the ambulance or resources needed to take Mr Oliver to the care home.

Mr Oliver then contacted the Ambulance Wish Foundation UK, which helps grant the final bucket list wishes of terminally ill people.

They then travelled from London to make his final wish come true.

The married couple had not seen each other for six months.

Son David Oliver said that whenever he would visit his mother at the care home she would ask where Derek was and if she could see him.

Derek told BBC News: 'When you have been together that long you miss her all the time. We've been together so long haven't we.'
