Sergeant keeps job after sticking photo of officer's face on image of naked porn star

A police sergeant has kept his job after sticking a photo of a female officer's face on a picture of a naked porn star as a Secret Santa gift to a colleague.

Sergeant Rob Adams, based at Hastings, East Sussex, framed the image, which had stickers over the model's private parts, before giving it as a present to a male co-worker.

He had also shared explicit material on a WhatsApp group, a misconduct hearing in Lewes was told.

The 37-year-old was told by the disciplinary panel that he will be given a final warning for his behaviour but will keep his job.

Alice Sims, legally qualified chair, told him: 'We feel that the public confidence in the reputation of the police service can be appropriately marked by calling this behaviour as misconduct and issuing a final warning.

'This is not a case that warrants dismissal.

'The intended consequences were for humour and not to cause harm or offence.

'There was no evidence of any police officer being offended by his behaviour.

'The behaviour was puerile, sexual in nature and, at times, sexist, but not at the more serious end of the scale.'

Ms Sims said Sgt Adams had received 'exemplary references' and had shown remorse and given 'practical examples' of how he had changed his behaviour.

Sgt Adams, who is married with two children, had been accused of breaching Sussex Police's equality and diversity rules.

He was accused of breaching standards of professional behaviour in respect of authority, respect and courtesy, duties and responsibilities and also failing to challenge and report improper discreditable conduct.

The disciplinary panel also heard that Sgt Adams and several other officers also shared and commented on dozens of explicit images and videos which were posted on a 20-officer strong WhatsApp group.

The officer also negatively rated the physical appearance of one female officer on the WhatsApp group while also praising the looks of another female colleague.

In a separate case, Detective Sergeant Paul Elrick (above) told a junior officer she was 'sexy' and looked and smelled 'gorgeous'

Mark Aldred, representing Sgt Adams, told the hearing the officer's error had been 'over-familiarity' with his team.

He added: 'His popularity has been a strength to the organisation. He has continued to serve at a high level.'

The hearing came after a detective at the same station in Hastings was found guilty of gross misconduct last week for smacking a female officer on the bottom with a ruler.

Detective Sergeant Paul Elrick told a junior officer she was 'sexy' and looked and smelled 'gorgeous'.

After the officer offered to make him a cup of tea, 48-year-old Elrick pinged her across the buttocks with a ruler as she walked past his desk.

Gross misconduct charges were proven for the 'schoolboy' behaviour but a disciplinary panel in Lewes ruled that he could keep his job after handing him a final written warning.
