The 650 metre long mudslide swept both the land and the eight houses on it into the swirling water on Wednesday.

'It appears no humans were in the area when it happened,' local police officer Torfinn Halvari told Norwegian news agency NTB.

'The dog was swept into the sea but managed to swim ashore and survived,' said Halvari.

The dog is seen bounding up to the rescuers as they see him on the shore.

After his rescue the dog ran off, but he was later re-united with his owners.
