Parody version of Ava Max's 'Sweet but Psycho' raising awareness of killer diabetes complication

It was a global hit that spent four weeks as number one in the UK.

But now Ava Max's chart-topper 'Sweet but Psycho' has been parodied to raise awareness of a killer diabetes complication.

The song has been re-written by a manufacturer of blood glucose testing kits to highlight the very serious problem of hypoglycaemia.

GlucoRx said the common occurrence of a 'hypo' can often be mistaken by the public as drunkenness.

But if not helped immediately - usually with a little sugar hit - it can be deadly.

Signs include slurred speech, blurred vision and looking pale, all of which can leave a diabetic struggling to get help.

A parody version of Ava Max's 'Sweet but Psycho' chart-topper is raising awareness of a killer diabetes complication called hypoglycaemia

Chris Chapman, chief operating officer at GlucoRx, said: 'A hypo can be fatal if left untreated. There are cases of people that have gone into a coma.

'I wanted to get people thinking more about hypos in general, what to look out for and how to treat while at the same time raise the profile of a national campaign running from September 30 to October 6.'

American singer Max released 'Sweet but Psycho' in 2018 exploring 'different sides' of a woman in a relationship.

GlucoRx's spoof plays on her words to reflect the very terrifying experience of going into a hypo – sung instead by the companies' customer care associate Ashling Clarke.

A hypo, when blood glucose levels drop below 4mmol/l, causes sweaty palms, a rising temperature, dizziness and fatigue.

The catchy lyrics include 'thinks she's hot, but it's hypo', 'feeling dizzy, and pretty tired, and 'it can start at any second… but don't wait you need to help it'.

Mr Chapman said: 'Symptoms can be misconstrued for other conditions. People can become pale, sweaty, irritable, angry or anxious.

The lyrics to the popular melody have been re-written to include 'Usually sweet, but she's hypo' by GlucoRx, a blood glucose test firm

The common occurrence of a 'hypo' can often be mistaken by the public as drunkness,GlucoRx said, as it can cause slurred speech and blurred vision

The new lyric 'At night she's screamin' "I'm ma-ma-ma out of range"' makes mild references to Dead in Bed Syndrome (DIB). Evidence suggests sudden deaths in type 1 diabetics are caused by a hypo in the night

WHAT IS HYPOGLYCAEMIA?

Hypoglycaemia - or a hypo - occurs when a person's blood sugar level drops too low.

It mainly affects diabetics, particularly if they take insulin.

If you have a device to check your blood sugar level, a reading of less than 4mmol/L is too low and should be treated.

Early symptoms can include:

If untreated, symptoms can develop into:

If hypos occur at night, people can wake with headaches, fatigue or damp sheets from sweat.

If your blood-sugar reading is less than 4mmol/L or you have hypo symptoms, have a sugary snack or drink and re-test your blood sugar level after 15minutes.

If it has not improved, seek medical attention. A glucagon injection can also help.

Causes of hypos can include:

'Most people would associate this with being drunk. If it's 9am, they are probably not drunk.

'Someone may not be able to explain hypo properly because they might have slurred speech or blurred eyesight.'

The song is directed towards the general public and friends, family and work colleagues of people living with diabetes.

However, a quarter of people with type 1 diabetes are unaware of hypos, according to Diabetes UK.

A hypo can be treated with immediate effect by eating five jelly babies, a small carton of fruit juice or gel sachets.

Mr Chapman said: 'After the sugar tax, some drinks that people prefer don't contain enough sugar after reformulation.

'I wouldn't recommend chocolate, because if someone is about to go unconscious, putting a piece of chocolate in their mouth isn't ideal.'

A hypo can be brought on by a number of things, including a delay in medication, too much medication, too much exercise, or alcohol.

Sometimes it occurs at night, which can cause a person to cry out or have headaches the next day.

The new lyric 'at night she's screamin' "I'm ma-ma-ma out of range"' makes mild references to dead in bed syndrome (DIB).

DIB is believed to account for about six per cent of cases of all deaths in under 40 year old people with type 1 diabetes, according to Diabetes UK.

A sudden death during the night could be caused by night time hypoglycaemia, triggering disturbances in heart rhythm, evidence suggests.

But the campaign aims to keep the topic light-hearted.

Mr Chapman said: 'If we can just make sure one person avoids a hospital admission from this, then the campaign is hugely successful.'

WHAT ARE THE 'SWEET BUT A HYPO'?

Usually sweet, now she’s hypo

A little bit hypo

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

Thinks she’s hot, but it’s hypo

And she’s turning white, so

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

It's like a curse, when it starts messing

And it can start at any second

Blood glucose lev-el, you’ll be checking,

But don’t wait, you need to help it

No, no, you'll feel wrong

Getting sweaty palms

You'll be saying, "No, no"

Then saying, "where’s my gel?"

'Cause right now I feel unwell

Usually sweet now she’s hypo

A little bit hypo

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

Thinks she's hot but it’s hypo

And she’s turning white, so

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

GlucoRx Gel kinda lady

Because it’s so tasty

Yeah, people say, "Do you feel okay?"

Usually sweet now she’s hypo

A little bit hypo

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

See, someone said, "What’s the commotion?"

This gel is like a magic potion

When hypos come, you have to eat it

'Cause it tastes so yum, and it’ll treat it

No, no, you'll feel wrong

Getting sweaty palms

You'll be saying, "No, no"

Then saying, "Where’s my gel?"

'Cause right now I feel unwell

Usually sweet now she’s hypo

A little bit hypo

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

Thinks she's hot but it’s hypo

And she’s turning white, so

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

GlucoRx Gel kinda lady

Because it’s so tasty

Yeah, people say, "Do you feel okay?"

Usually sweet now she’s hypo

A little bit hypo

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

Feeling dizzy, and pretty tired

Hypo treatment will now be required

Delayed a meal? Too much insulin?

That means it’s time to get your gel in

Usually sweet but she’s hypo

A little bit hypo

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

Thinks she's hot but it’s hypo

And she’s turning white, so

At night she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my range"

GlucoRx Gel kinda lady

Because it’s so tasty

Yeah, people say, "Do you feel okay?"

'Cause now she’s sweet she’s not hypo

She’s no longer hypo

And now she's screamin'

"I'm-ma-ma-ma back in range"
