NY Assembly aide, 40, is charged with sexual assault of 18-year-old

Joseph Brady, 40, was arrested on Saturday and charged with sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman inside in home in Watervliet, police say. Brady was charged with felony sexual abuse and misdemeanor counts of unlawfully dealing with a child, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child

A longtime aide to New York Assemblyman Peter Abbate Jr and former Mayor Mike Bloomberg staffer was arrested over the weekend for assaulting an 18-year-old woman.

Joseph Brady, 40, was arrested on Saturday and charged with attacking the young woman at his home in Watervliet, police say.

The home was raided by law enforcement and FBI agents after officials learned he may have been keeping firearms, explosives and narcotics there. While no firearms were found at the home, agents ended up recovering drugs and what appeared to be bomb–making materials.

Brady currently serves as the legislative director for Abbate Jr, 71, and is paid more than $118,000 a year in the position.

Abbate hasn't commented on his arrest.

He also formerly worked for the administration of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as a representative to the 9/11 workers’ taskforce.

Brady was accused of assaulting the woman after her 16-year-old boyfriend, who was also briefly staying with Brady, left the residence.

Police say Brady allegedly sent the boy and another person to a nearby motel on Saturday to purchase more drugs and while they were out he allegedly assaulted the 18-year-old woman.

When the 16-year-old boy returned to the resident he found his girlfriend disheveled and disoriented. She had been moved from a couch to a bedroom and showed signs of being sexually assaulted, according to the Albany Times Union.

The two teens fled the home and Brady allegedly confronted them in an alley outside and displayed what appeared to be a firearm.

The two then ran to a nearby residence to call for help.

He also formerly worked for the administration of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as a representative to the 9/11 workers’ taskforce.

Brady was charged with felony sexual abuse and misdemeanor counts of unlawfully dealing with a child, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was being held at Albany County jail on Sunday on $50,000 bail.

Officials say Brady is associated with a motorcycle gang that has ties to the Hells Angels.

A law enforcement official said Brady has been on a law enforcement ‘watch list’ and was questioned last year by State Police investigators in connection with the disappearance of Michael P. Ahren in January 2019. The 42-year-old Stillwater resident was a member of the Rolling Pride motorcycle club.

Law enforcement officials have said they suspect Ahern, who has still not been found, is a homicide victim.

Brady was a mixed martial arts fighter in the past and has a criminal history that includes a 2019 arrest in Ohio for drug possession and carrying a concealed weapon.
