Nominees for BBC's Sports Personality of the Year 2020 announced

Tyson Fury has been nominated for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award joining Lewis Hamilton, Stuart Broad, Jordan Henderson, Ronnie O'Sullivan and Hollie Doyle on the 2020 shortlist.

Fury was announced as the sixth and final contender on Tuesday ahead of the show which will take place at Media City in Salford on December 20.

His nomination comes after Fury defeated Deontay Wilder in a rematch fight back in February to take the WBC world championship belt.

Jordan Henderson was the third name to be revealed as a nominee on Tuesday afternoon

After a controversial draw in their first bout back in 2018, Fury was keen to seal victory in their Las Vegas rematch.

Wilder had held the WBC belt for five years and this fight was his 11th defence, but he was no match for the power and skill of Fury, who knocked the American down twice before his corner threw in the towel.

Fury's win meant he became a two-time heavyweight champion and marked the long road to recovery after his battles with depression.

O'Sullivan, who was the penultimate nominee, won his sixth World Snooker Championship title in emphatic style at the Crucible earlier this year, 19 years after his first and he has remarkably earned his first ever SPOTY nomination.

Speaking about the award three years ago, he said: 'I'm so happy I don't get nominated because I never would want to go.

'It's not my type of thing - standing around at some gathering - it's not my scene and I really hope I never get nominated.'

O'Sullivan clinched his sixth World Championship title after defeating Kyren Wilson in August

Hamilton drew level with Michael Schumacher with his seventh world title in Turkey this month

Hamilton was confirmed as a nominee by 'The Body Coach' Joe Wicks on BBC Breakfast

In 2019, he added: 'I think if you are politically correct and you're that sort of person then you probably are going to get them awards.

'If you're not then they're probably going to run a mile from you. I suppose that's what it is.'

But O'Sullivan has finally been shortlisted as a reward for another stellar 12 months.

'The Rocket' thrashed Kyren Wilson 18–8 in a one-sided world championship final and at 44 years old at the time of winning, he became the oldest champion since Ray Reardon was victorious aged 45 in 1978.

O'Sullivan, one of the sport's great characters, has now won more ranking titles (37) and more Triple Crown event titles (20) than any other player in history.

Despite his achievements in 2020, O'Sullivan will have a tough time beating Hamilton, who is the bookies' favourite.

The Mercedes driver won his seventh Formula One world title this season, equalling the legendary Michael Schumacher's tally. It was also his fourth consecutive drivers' championship.

After being dropped, Broad returned to take 16 Test wickets and pass 500 for his career

Wicks appeared on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show with Greg James to announce Broad

The 35-year-old, who tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday and will miss this weekend's second Bahrain Grand Prix, also overtook Schumacher's haul of 91 Grand Prix wins.

It was widely anticipated Hamilton would be among the six contenders for the main award and that was confirmed by 'The Body Coach' Joe Wicks on BBC Breakfast.

Wicks then appeared on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show with Greg James to announce Broad as the second nominee, before later confirming Henderson's place on the list on BBC Radio 1 Xtra.

Broad appeared to be out of favour with the England selectors earlier this summer when he was dropped for the first match against West Indies.

But he was restored to the line-up for the final two Tests and made a statement with 16 wickets at an average of 10.93.

In doing so, he also managed to pass the 500-wicket barrier for his career and now sits seventh in the list of all-time Test wicket takers.

Henderson's nomination comes after he helped Liverpool to win the Premier League title

Henderson, meanwhile, takes his place on the list at the end of a year in which he guided Liverpool to the Premier League title for the first time in 20 years.

The midfielder played a vital role in the Reds' incredibly successful 2020, which followed on from their Champions League triumph the year previously.

Henderson was also voted the Football Writers Association Footballer of the Year for the 2019-20 season and also took a place in the PFA Team of the Season.

Jockey Doyle broke her own record for the number of winners ridden by a British woman in a year in a stunning 12 months in which she set several landmarks.

Despite racing being suspended for 10 weeks because of the pandemic, Doyle set her new mark in a quicker time and with fewer rides.

The 24-year-old rode a historic double on British Champions Day, became the first woman to ride five winners on the same card and claimed her first victory at Royal Ascot.
