Multiple injured in Long Island Stop & Shop shooting

Police are still on the hunt for the gunman who was seen dressed all in black and wearing a mask. They named the suspect as 30-year-old Gabriel DeWitt Wilson

An employee is dead and two others are injured after a gunman opened fire at a New York Stop & Shop supermarket this morning. 

The shooting broke out inside the supermarket in the Long Island neighborhood of West Hempstead just before 11.30am. 

Police are still on the hunt for the gunman who was seen dressed all in black and wearing a mask. 

They named a person of interest as 30-year-old Gabriel DeWitt Wilson.

Police said Wilson had been employed at the store but it wasn't immediately clear if he still worked there. 

Wilson was wearing all black and carrying a small handgun as he fled westbound on Hempstead Turnpike, according to police. 

Sources told NBC that the gunman is believed to have fled by jumping on a nearby bus.   

Police the person who was killed was a 49-year-old Stop & Shop employee. 

The shooting happened inside a manager's office, which is upstairs from the shopping floor.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said there were around 'a couple hundred' people inside the store at the time of the shooting.

Police are urging local residents to remain indoors while the gunman is at large.  

The West Hempstead School District immediately went into lockdown following the shooting. 

Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid issued a statement in which he said the company was 'shocked and heartbroken.' 

'Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, our associates, customers and the first responders who have responded heroically to this tragic situation,' Reid said, adding that the store would be closed until further notice.
