Moment car flies off road and smashes into front of a pub

This is the dramatic moment a car flies off a road and crashes into the front of a pub.

The shocking CCTV footage shows the Peugeot take off and flip over as it careers through a car park, destroying outside tables, chairs and barrels before smashing into the building.

The jaw-dropping accident left the driver trapped upside down inside with potential spinal injuries and the landlord with a £30,000 repair bill.

But as the pub was shut due to lockdown, fortunately no customers were caught up in the incident.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find a man, in his 40s, with potentially serious spinal injuries. They took him to University Hospital Southampton

The crash took place on Saturday when the silver car was driving down the 60mph Apless Lane in Worlds End, Hants.

Footage shows it suddenly veering off the tarmac and through the gates of the Chairmakers Arms pub.

Landlord Angus Reid and his wife Sherry were inside the pub drinking their coffee when they saw the car spinning in mid-air, sending debris across the car park.

Angus said: 'We were sitting having a cup of coffee when we heard a metal crunching noise and we looked out the window to see a car flying through the air.

'I tried to get the doors open but had no chance, they were jammed and crushed.

'My wife was on the phone to the emergency services but the occupant was unconscious and looked in a bad way.'

Eventually the driver regained consciousness, but as Angus attempted to reassure him we said the man appeared to be heavily disorientated and in a lot of pain.

'He was screaming that his back hurt and there was other injuries I could make out but couldn't get close enough to do anything about it.'

Emergency services soon arrived on the scene and cut the driver out of the car.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance said: 'We received a 999 call at 08..59am on Saturday, February 27, with the caller reporting a car had left the road at speed, hit The Chairmakers Arms and ended up on its roof in the pub's car park.

'We sent two ambulances, a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance critical care car to the incident.

'The driver, a male aged around 40-years-old, had sustained potentially serious spinal injuries and less serious arm and facial injuries.

'Following initial treatment at the scene, he was then taken to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Southampton.'

According to Mr Reid, this is the second major accident in three months along this road. He has called for the speed limit on the road outside to be lowered from 60mph, especially in the run up to the 'notorious junction' outside the pub.

The pub will need a new bay window and a host of other repairs must be carried out, which Mr Reid estimates to be at least £30,000.
