Marshal is seriously injured when a motocross bike landed on him on Weymouth Beach

A marshal has been seriously injured after a motocross bike landed on him during a practice race on Weymouth Beach.

It is believed the steward was hit at around 12.30pm on Sunday at the Dorset event before he was flown to Southampton Hospital.

The marshal was then carried on a stretcher by paramedics into the helicopter which was forced to land on the beach.

Witnesses on Twitter said the steward was hit on the head, and described seeing the air ambulance along with a heavy police presence.

The event was temporarily stopped, with races resuming at around 3pm, the Dorset Echo reports.   

More than 300 riders were expected to take part in this year's race on a course of jumps and bumps.

Riders include experts who have won championships in the UK and abroad.

The event first started in in 1984 and has grown to be the biggest amateur race of its kind in the UK.
