Man chooses to go to jail rather than give beloved dog Roxy back to his former employer

A pest controller has been locked in a fight with his former employer over his pet dog Roxy.

The bedbug-sniffing pitbull was provided to Barry Myrick, 37, by M&M Environmental in Queens, New York, as part of his work helping to inspect commercial and residential properties.

The dog lived with Myrick and his wife Joana for four years, and she soon became a firm part of the family.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Myrick chose to be laid off from his company rather than begin to work as a Covid-19 cleaner which would have required him to give Roxy back to the company.

Instead, he handed back his company vehicle, credit cards and equipment, but decided to keep Roxy.

He admitted that when he took Roxy on, he signed a contract that declared he would have to hand her back if his contract was terminated or if he left the company.

However he alleges that M&M forfeited its claim to her when the company laid him off.

M&M took legal action after Myrick refused to hand back the dog, accusing him of stealing from the business

According to Myrick, a company manager had told him: 'You're going to keep Roxy, right?'

M&M Environmental, who had paid for the dog's food and veterinary bills, demanded that their former employee hand back the pitbull, and sent him a letter referring to her as 'company property'.

M&M lawyer Gary Port has insisted that the company owns Roxy, and claims that training a dog like her can cost $15,000.

Myrick surrendered to the NYPD in August and spent 15 hours behind bars.

Speaking to the New York Post about his experience, he said: 'I spent 15 hours in jail. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Myrick's wife Joana has set up a GoFundMe page to help with costs in the battle to keep Roxy

'The stories I heard were unreal — someone beat their stepdad with a baseball bat. I couldn't tell anyone I was there for a puppy.'

For now, Myrick, who moved from Brooklyn to Philadelphia in May, has been permitted to keep the pitbull pending a court decision.

He remains adamant that he doesn't want to be separated from the dog despite family members advising him to give her up.

Myrick says he fears that Roxy would not bond with another owner in the same way.

'She's not a golden retriever who will be happy-go-lucky with just anyone,' he told the publication.

'I've emptied out my bank account, spent time in jail . . . what else can they throw at me? I'll fight this to the end.'

Myrick's wife Joana has set up a GoFundMe page to help with costs in the battle to keep Roxy.

The page states that the 'legal ping-pong' the couple have faced has resulted in 'a small fortune in legal fees, while Barry continues unemployed.'

'Thanks to our amazing friends and the instragam community of dog lovers, we were able to raise half of what we spent, using our savings to complement.

'But our battle is far from being over!

'And the more the case lingers, the more costly it becomes, so help us #FightForRoxy!'

So far, the page has raised over $13,000.
