How to hide that 'Corona stone': Disguise curves with Whistles' new collaboration

These are very strange fashion times. Shops are shut, factories are closed and the shows are cancelled, taking the seasonal trends with them.

Meanwhile, nobody worries about dressing down any more because the big no-no for summer 2020 is looking too dressed up. If it’s not a uniform or outfit that says ‘exercise’ or ‘essential journey’ then it’s viewed with mild suspicion. There’s also the ‘corona stone’ to be factored into new purchases, in other words the 14 lb that most of us will have put on during lockdown.

Of course, we all meant to Joe Wicks ourselves down to a size eight, but, in times of stress, banana bread tends to trump burpees.

As we start to emerge from lockdown, then, how best to look fresh and put-together without resembling the guest who didn’t know the party had been cancelled?

Some retailers have responded to this style conundrum by putting leisurewear front and centre and burying everything else in the recesses of their websites.

Others are hoping discounts on high heels, fancy frocks and anything else that announces itself as ‘pre-virus stock’ will keep customers happy for the time being. A few brave souls, however, are launching new collections which they hope will suit the spirit of now: groomed but serviceable if suddenly confined to barracks.

Among the best is a collaboration between Whistles and Australian-born designer Louise Markey’s label L.F. Markey. For those who don’t want to advertise an (expanded) midriff, but aren’t ready to submit to the elasticated waist, the collection’s tummy-skimming jumpsuits are worth considering.

Similarly, if you feel you’ve been living on a diet of denim and jersey for the past two months, then have a look at the dusty pink trousers or the mint-green midi dress which will work with just about any other colour and with trainers or sandals.

L.F. Markey is best known for expert cutting and comfortable, practical designs. In other words, if you are suddenly overcome by the desire to drop to the floor for a press-up, these clothes won’t get in your way. Just make sure you put down the banana bread first.
