A fisherman is under investigation for catching a massive saltwater crocodile and taking it home.

The man was fishing in his boat in the Peter Faust dam, near Proserpine in Far North Queensland, on Saturday.

He captured the 1.7 metre saltwater crocodile and restrained the animal in his boat before taking it home.

The Department of Environment and Science (DES) said the man contacted them as soon as he arrived home with the animal.

They retrieved the crocodile and took it to a zoo before commencing investigations into the incident.

The department is warning people of the dangers of approaching crocodiles, with the man risking serious injury for capturing it.

'A 1.7m crocodile is quite capable of inflicting serious injuries on a person, particularly when it is feeling threatened,' a DES spokesperson told Nine News.

'And people who kill or cause injury to a saltwater crocodile can be fined up to $30,026.'

The young male crocodile is now at Bredl's Wild Farm at Bloomsbury, north of Mackay.
