Fisherman catches giant crayfish in Australia but it's not just the catch that's got people talking

A fisherman has shared a video to TikTok showing off a gigantic 'crayfish' he caught in waters off the Australian coast.

In the footage Mr Moss can be seen holding the huge sea creature up and explaining that 'I'm going to put him back. Crayfish can live out of the water for a while so I'd thought I'd show you guys. Look at the size of him.'

TikTok user ybsbrodie (pictured) caught the huge rock lobster off the Australian coast and uploaded the clip last week

The video then shows Mr Moss releasing the crustacean under the water where it retreats behind a rocky outcrop.

But some viewers were more interested in Mr Moss himself with many swooning that he safely returned the rock lobster to the sea.

'Well done sweet man for throwing this little guy back into his natural habitat,'' one person said.

'Thank you for showing him and putting him back. He is beautiful and so is the crayfish,' another added.

Other people commenting questioned whether Mr Moss was correct in saying he had found a 'crayfish'.

'Isn't that a lobster though?' one person said.

'Not a crawfish, that's a rock lobster. Crawfish live in freshwater, lobsters live in saltwater. That and size are the only difference between them,' an American viewer said

According to the WA Museum, crayfish, lobsters and rock lobsters are similar but distinctly different crustaceans.

Lobsters have two large front claws, while rock lobsters do not and instead develop thorns on their carapace as a means of defence.

Crayfish are generally found in fresh water.

Rock lobsters are also commonly called crayfish in Australia, though technically they are not.

Lobsters, rock lobsters and crayfish are not limited to particular regions and are found throughout Australia's waterways and coastlines.
