Ex-Manchester United star Chris Eagles was arrested for being drunk in charge of a vehicle

A former Manchester United player was arrested by police for being drunk in his car outside the home of his girlfriend, a court heard.

The winger, who played for the Old Trafford club alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, was found at the wheel of his Audi, nearly three times over the limit, outside Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe’s house at about 3.15am.

And according to The Sun a court was told Eagles, who also played for Burnley and Bolton Wanderers, had gone to sleep after getting no answer at her home.

But prosecutor Nicole Bridgeman told Manchester JPs the car’s engine was on and the 35-year-old's seatbelt was done up.

Jeremy Spencer, defending, said the engine was only on to charge his mobile.

Eagles denies being drunk and will face a trial.

Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe was seen with her footballer boyfriend Chris Eagles for the first time in January.

Eagles played for Manchester United during one of the club's most successful times but failed to hold down a place

She was first reported to be dating Chris in December as sources claimed the pair were part of each other's support bubble, four months after the soap star split from her long-term boyfriend Greg Lake.

The footballer was also said to be single following his split from fiancée and girlfriend of eight years Danielle Mitchinson, 30.

Danielle, a former friend, later accused her of breaking the ‘girl code’ by dating her ex.
