Eskies save the life of four men whose boat capsized off Nelson Bay

Four fishermen's lives were saved by Eskies after their boat capsized in rough waters off the New South Wales coast.

The group had been spearfishing near Broughton Island, north of Nelson Bay, on Tuesday when a 1.5m swell hit.

After the emergency beacon was activated the boat started taking on water.

The quick-thinking mates grabbed their Eskies and jumped in the ocean - using the ice and fish coolers as flotation devices.

When the rescue boat arrived, the men were seen treading water in the ocean while clinging to their Eskies

'You got to think on your feet I guess, pretty quickly you've got to clear the boat and grab the essentials and the essentials was that life cell,' fisherman Noah Hamilton told 9News.

'It just tipped and everyone just cleared the boat because you can get sucked under,' Moritz Mutscheller said.

'Two minutes [later] and the boat was gone.'

A rescue coordination centre in Canberra picked up on the beacon's distress signal, before contacting the NSW Water Police.

'Where's your boat?' a rescuer was filmed asking the men.

'Down the bottom [of the ocean],' they responded.

Mr Hamilton said they used their last flair to alert the rescue team on the horizon.
