England supporters ignore social distancing rules to cram into Euro 2020 fan zone in Dorset

Hundreds of fans crammed into a fan zone for yesterday's match ignored social distancing as they celebrated England's winning goal against Croatia.

Images show the supporters squeezed tightly together as they watched the Three Lions' opening match of Euro 2020 at Wembley on a big screen.

But when Raheem Sterling scored the winning goal many of the fans were seen embracing each other and stood with their arms around each other.

250 England supporters attended the fan zone in Weymouth Harbour in Dorset on Sunday

Several fans sat aloft on their friends' shoulders while two mates grabbed each other by the head in celebration.

The jubilant scenes were recorded in front of a giant TV screen at Weymouth Harbour, Dorset.

The local council have given permission for a maximum of 250 fans to gather in the same space to ensure social distancing.

Under current rules that are expected to be extended by another four weeks, outdoor gatherings are limited to 30 people.

Several people online were furious watching the scenes with many pointing out the inconsistencies between the football crowd and weddings and funerals which are still limited to the number of people they can have

The group of supporters seemed to flout Covid rules as they enjoyed the opening match

The jubilant supporters' actions drew scorn online from people comparing the number to those allowed to currently attend weddings and funerals

Jenny Young posted: 'How is this actually being allowed to go ahead? It goes against current restrictions.'

Ella-Louise Fitzgerald said: 'I have to choose which family can come to my gran's funeral.'

Dave Taylor added on Facebook: 'Covid's coming home, it's coming home, covid's coming home.'

There are plans to have the fan zone in place for the next two England matches against Scotland and the Czech Republic.

Keith Treggiden, general manager of the Rendezvous pub, which is putting on the TV screen, said last week he hoped people would be responsible.

He said: 'We will be expecting people to follow the rules, follow the 'hands, space, face' guidance and check in with test and trace upon arrival.

He said: 'We want people to follow the rules and keep safe. That is the expectation we have and we hope people are sensible.'

Both Rendezvous and Dorset Council have been approached for comment.
