Chinese man 'sells his son', 2, to a childless couple for £17,000

A Chinese man has been arrested for allegedly selling his son, two, and using the money to go travelling with his new girlfriend.

The suspect, identified by his surname Xie, from the Chinese province of Zhejiang, won custody of his son after divorcing his wife, who was granted custody of their daughter.

The father left the boy, nicknamed Jiajia, in the care of his brother Lin, who lives in the city of Huzhou, while he needed to work in another area.

Xie was given custody of the his son, nicknamed Jiajia (pictured being reunited with family by police) after divorcing his wife, who was given custody of their daughter

Upon his return, Xie was said to have taken his son from his brother's home, reportedly telling his family and that Jiajia's mother wanted to see him.

Lin, who had grown attached to the boy, later found out that Jiajia had never arrived at his mother's home and questioned Xie about it to make sure the child was okay.

When his brother declined to answer, worried Lin reported the incident to the police on April 22.

After an investigation, the local police said they discovered that Jiajia had been sold to a childless couple in the city of Changsu in Jiangsu Province for CNY 158,000 (£17,548).

Xie allegedly sold his son before using the cash to take his new wife travelling and taking photos of the stack of banknotes to flaunt his wealth to his friends. 

The police returned Jiajia to his uncle's care while Xie and the couple who purchased the boy are all being investigated over the alleged sale. The investigation is ongoing.

According to Chinese media, Xie previously gave away two of his daughters from a previous marriage because he was in dire financial straits.
