The 80-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle and slammed into the front of Chino & Co in Beaumaris, Melbourne, at about 2pm on Tuesday.

Terrifying vision obtained by 7NEWS showed a pedestrian dressed in shorts, sneakers and a red cap running away from the car as it reversed at speed.

The pedestrian escaped injury as the car smashed into the cafe, shattering the front window.

The driver was taken to hospital in a stable condition after being treated for shock.

The crash reportedly occurred after the elderly driver became frazzled because she hit a mailbox.

'When she did that she panicked, hit the accelerator and backed right around and ran into the shop here,' Chino & Co's part owner Graeme Fedley said.

'She just missed people walking past.'

'Luckily we're able to open tomorrow for dine-in and takeaway coffees/food,' the cafe wrote on Instagram.

'The side door will be the main entrance for the next few weeks.

'We can ensure it is safe for customers and staff tomorrow for coffees and food. Hope to see you guys tomorrow.'
