Campaign manager for Democrat NYC council candidate brands Upper West Side 'too white and Jewish'

The campaign manager for a New York City council candidate has sparked backlash after suggesting the Upper West Side is too white and Jewish during a Twitter row.

Quinn Mootz, who is running Sara Lind's bid, told her followers that the wealthy Manhattan neighborhood has a 'diversity problem' in now deleted tweets.

She added: 'Jews are not POC [people of color] for just being jewish sorry.'

In her post on April 13 she noted: 'As of 2018: 10.8% of the population is Asian, 4.1% black, 14.1% hispanic, and 68.4% white. So yeah ima go ahead and say the UWS has a diversity problem.

'Of your 191,000 residents…. 130,795 are white.'

Mootz, who is white, Jewish and has worked for Bernie Sanders and Democrat fundraising group the Progressive Turnout Project, also labeled people 's***y' and blasted a critic of woke politics as a 'f**king moron' in other now deleted posts.

Another added: 'Well this is just charming isn't it? My father came to NY in the 1950's. You see, Germany had been "too Jewish" and he and his family had to leave.'

Upper West Side resident Steven Dzik told The New York Post: 'I have to assume the campaign manager's views reflect the candidate's. Mootz's comment shows contempt for the residents of the neighborhood she hopes to represent.'

Democrat Lind last week tweeted to announce her campaign was coming off Twitter due to the online abuse she says she received

Lind said: 'We've been trolled relentlessly with slurs, sexual assault & death threats, and anonymous cowards spreading misinformation'

Figures show that in 2018 10.8% of the Upper West Side identified as Asian, 4.1% identified as black, 14.1% identified as Hispanic, and 68.4% identified as white

Figures from The New York Times show that in 2013 there were more than 70,000 Jews on the Upper West Side.

The Furman Center notes: 'In 2018, there were about 191,222 people in Upper West Side, with 10.8% of the population identified as Asian, 4.1% identified as black, 14.1% identified as Hispanic, and 68.4% identified as white.

'Median household income in 2018 was $123,840, about 91% more than citywide median household income ($64,850). The poverty rate in Upper West Side was 8.5% in 2018 compared to 17.3% citywide.'

A 2019 estimate shared by the official US Census estimated that 42.7 per cent of people living in Manhattan are white, 29.1 per cent are Hispanic, with 24.3 per cent black, 14.1 per cent Asian and 3.6 per cent said they were mixed race.

Democrat Lind is running to replace current councilwoman Helen Rosenthal, who last June sparked fury by tweeting: 'Yes, We Mean Literally Abolish the Police' as the city was hit by riots and looting
