Ax-wielding woman goes on bizarre rampage in Manhattan, chops another woman's leg, steals cigarettes

A woman axed her friend's leg, went to her local bodega and served customers while holding the blade, then barricaded herself in a freight elevator, police say.

The bizarre incident began in New York City's Upper East Side on Monday night after the unnamed 23-year-old got into an argument with a 29-year-old woman at a mutual friends apartment.

She is said to have used the small ax she was filmed wielding to cut a gash in the older woman's right shin.

'I was scared. I looked at my ankle and I was bleeding. It was very weird,' the victim, whose name was also withheld, told the Daily News.

The 23-year-old entered a local deli where she is seen on surveillance footage rummaging around by the cash register and serving customers- ax still in hand

The store clerk, who says he knows her as a client who he chats to about stocks, said the woman came in claiming someone was trying to kill her

From there the woman fled the apartment through the fire escape, making it to the roof before entering a local deli where she is seen on surveillance footage rummaging around by the cash register and serving customers - ax still in hand.

The store clerk, who says he knows her as a client who he chats to about stocks, said the woman came in claiming someone was trying to kill her.

'Her palms were covered in blood. She had an ax,' he told the Daily News. 'She came in my store and said, ''Help me. They're coming to kill me.'' She kept talking about ''the cat, the cat, they're going to kill the cat.''

At one point she makes off with two packs of cigarettes, promising to pay back the clerk.

The ax-wielding woman boarded a bus for one block before entering a building on East 86th Street and barricaded herself in a freight elevator

After 20 minutes police were able to coax her out of the freight elevator and transported her to a local hospital to be treated for a laceration on her leg

The woman then boarded a bus for one block before entering a building on East 86th Street and barricaded herself in a freight elevator.

The doorman at the building said she asked him to hide her but he was frightened by the ax-wielding woman.

'She said 'Hide me!' I said, ''No, you have an ax!'' he said. 'Then she ran into the elevator and locked herself in. I was bugging out.'

After 20 minutes police were able to coax her out of the elevator, transporting her to a local hospital to be treated for a laceration on her leg she is believed to have suffered on the fire escape.

Police do not have a motive for the attack, charges are pending.

The crime comes amid a recent spike in violent crimes in New York City.
