Awkward moment Queensland MP gives rousing speech about the wrong bill she had voted for weeks ago

A Queensland MP has been left red-faced after giving a rousing seven minute speech on a bill she and the rest of Federal Parliament had voted on weeks ago.

Angie Bell, the Liberal MP for the safe seat of Moncrieff on the Gold Coast, appeared visibly embarrassed after another MP revealed she was debating the wrong bill.

Labor MP for Kingsford Smith, Matt Thistlethwaite took the stand to flag the faux pas after Ms Bell had spoken for over seven minutes.

'I believe the member is speaking on the wrong bill at the moment, I believe we are debating a different bill,' he announced to the room.

'Investment funds legislation amendment bill 2021?,' the Speaker asked.

'Is that the bill the member is referring to?' Mr Thistlethwaite followed up with the Liberal MP.

'I'm happy for her to speak on this but just listening to the speech it appeared it was a different bill.'

A long silence filled the room as heads swivelled in Ms Bell's direction.

The MP replied defensively that she was continuing the last speech she came to the House with.

'Madame Deputy Speaker I have actually completed my speech,' she said.

Commentators were quick to poke fun at the MP on Twitter with some questioning if anyone else in the room had even noticed.

'LNP Member for Moncrief, Angie Bell, just spoke for 7 minutes before @MThistlethwaite pointed out she was speaking on a totally different bill to the one the House was debating,' one observant user posted.

Originally from Adelaide, Ms Bell (pictured with former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian) has been a member of the House of Representatives since the 2019 Federal Election

'The best bit? Her speech was for a bill she'd already voted for a week ago.'

Others pointed out the lack of accountability.

'Extraordinary that LNP member Angie Bell spoke to wrong Bill - more extraordinary that no acknowledgement made of her error by either MP or deputy speaker- can they never admit error?' one woman wrote.

'Did they even realise?' another replied.
