Anti-homelessness campaigner, 69, brutally beaten up 'by homeless woman, 23'

A 69-year-old woman who helps the homeless was hospitalized with a concussion, fractured skull, missing teeth, and memory loss after she was assaulted by a homeless woman who suspected her of turning her in to police.

Janice Rains-Moran spent three nights in the hospital after she was savagely beaten near an apartment complex in the Clear Lake section of Houston on Friday night.

The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Marnae Brown, a homeless woman believed to have a history of mental illness or intellectual disability.

She has been charged with injury to an elderly individual. Bond has been set at $10,000.

Brown allegedly pulled Rains-Moran’s hair, knocked out several of her teeth, and gave her a concussion, KTRK-TV reported.

The incident took place just outside the Riviera Apartments complex at Clear Lake on Friday.

The incident shocked the family of Rains-Moran, who has been known in the community as someone who helps the homeless population find work and permanent housing.

Her daughter, Danielle Rains, said she and her mom regularly work to try and get the local homeless community into work and accommodation.

Part of the job involves working with local law enforcement.

According to Danielle, Brown accused her mother of trying to set her up.

'She shoved my mom down to the ground,’ she told DailyMail.com.

‘My mom passed out cold.'

Two Good Samaritans then stepped in to try and shield Janice from a further onslaught.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help Janice pay for medical expenses. As of Tuesday, it raised more than $3,000

But Brown’s boyfriend soon emerged with a gun.

'The woman who attacked my mom the first time used the commotion as a chance to start attacking her again,’ Danielle said.

'She grabbed her hair by the left hand, then punched her with her right hand. She kicked my mom on the skull.'

Janice was left injured with several of her teeth missing, though the family still doesn’t know exactly how many since they haven’t been able to open her mouth.

She also suffered bleeding on the brain and damage to her left eyes as a result of the attack.

She also doesn’t have any memory of the attack, and remains spaced-out on powerful painkillers, Danielle said.

A spokesperson for the Houston Police Department refused to comment on what took place, only to say that the investigation is ongoing.

'It's rough,' Janice's grandson, Cameron Cave, said.

'It's just an older lady. Like defenseless. I mean, who could do that to someone like that?

'She couldn't fight back.'
