Security has been beefed up in and around Mandera’s Moi Stadium ahead of Thursday’s Madaraka Day celebrations.

County Commissioner Amos Mariba has assured residents of their safety as they plan to attend the event that will be presided over by the county leadership.

“As we celebrate Madaraka day tomorrow, I want to assure you that all the necessary security measures have been put in place and adequate personnel deployed to ensure members of the public enjoy the day in a safe and secure environment,” said Mariba.

Mariba urged Mandera residents to join in celebrating this historic day noting they have lined up exciting events for entertainment.

“I am delighted to inform you that the county celebrations steering committee has organized a variety of entertainment events such as acrobatics. We shall also have choirs from different schools," said Mariba, who is also the county security committee chairman.

Residents have claimed that al-Shabab insurgents have enhanced their presence along the Kenya-Somalia border.

Continuous patrol

The county commissioner, however, assured the public of their safety and affirmed that security officers are on continuous patrol, especially in areas where the militants are likely to hide.

Officials from the county government said everyone will be screened thoroughly before being allowed into the stadium.

Mr Matker Noor, the deputy county secretary, said vehicles will not be allowed beyond particular points in the stadium except for those ferrying dignitaries.

"No taxi or matatu will be allowed inside of the stadium. We are asking residents to be at the various spectator stands by 8am. Our enforcement officers will arrive early and will work with the police and other security agencies in screening those accessing the premises," said Noor.

Artists invited to perform during the event include a famous Somali traditional dance, and Comedy by the Mandera Got Talent team among others.
