Thailand's auto exports up over 12 pct in May

BANGKOK, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's auto exports continued to expand in May due to last year's low comparative base and higher shipments to most foreign markets, data showed on Thursday.

The country's finished car exports increased 12.25 percent from a year earlier last month to 86,358 units, following a leap of 43.53 percent year-on-year in April, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Auto manufacturers produced 150,532 vehicles in the country last month, up 16.48 percent from a year earlier due to higher production for exports and domestic sales, according to Surapong Paisitpattanapong, the FTI's automotive industry club vice president and spokesperson.

In the first five months of the year, car production expanded 6.72 percent from a year earlier to 775,955 units, indicating that the expected year-end car production target of 1.95 million units is achievable, Surapong told a news conference.

Domestic auto sales edged up 0.55 percent from a year earlier last month to 65,088 units after a 6.14 percent drop in April, according to Surapong.
