Malaysian PM visits Laos to boost ties

VIENTIANE, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's two-day visit to Laos is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Malaysian prime minister arrived in the Lao capital Vientiane on Monday, along with his wife and a delegation, at the invitation from his Lao counterpart Sonexay Siphandone.

On Tuesday, the two leaders had a meeting to discuss ways to strengthen relations between the two countries as well as boost cooperation on the economic front.

During his first official trip to the country, the Malaysian prime minister also paid a courtesy visit to Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, the Lao National Radio reported on Tuesday.

The Lao president highly valued the Malaysian prime minister's visit and his meeting with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

He also spoke highly of friendship and sound cooperation between Laos and Malaysia which have grown constantly over the past years as shown in the successful implementation of numerous activities and regular exchanges of visits at various levels.

The Lao president called on the Malaysian prime minister to continue to support human resource development in Laos and asked both Lao and Malaysian prime ministers to continue to promote cooperation in various areas.

Anwar informed the Lao president that his visit to Laos aimed to further strengthen friendship and sound cooperation between Malaysia and Laos.
