A young girl has been knocked down by a car during the Christmas lights switch-on in Kilwinning.

Emergency services raced to Lauchlan Way in the Ayrshire town after the alarm was raised at around 6.55pm on Thursday.

Ambulance crews rushed the girl to Crosshouse Hospital.

Her condition is unknown.

Officers probing the incident were unable to confirm her age.

Lauchlan Way, near Ayrshire College, remains closed off as police continue their enquiries.

A spokesperson from Police Scotland told the Record: "Police were called to a report of a female pedestrian who was hit by a car in Lauchlan Way in Kilwinning.

"We were called at 6.55pm.

"The girl was taken to hospital by ambulance.

"Her condition is unknown at this stage.

"Lauchalan Way remains closed off near Ayrshire College."
