A woman was left in "disbelief" after spotting an animal that reportedly looked like a "black panther" in Wirral.

The woman was walking her dog at around 4pm on Wednesday when she saw the animal on New Brighton promenade.

She shared what happened in a community group on Facebook in the hope of finding others who had seen the animal and knew what it was.

The woman described the creature as a "black panther looking thing" and said she had seen similar reports in the area.

She said: "I had no time to get a picture because I was just in genuine disbelief and honestly a little bit scared."

Replying to her post, other residents said they had seen similar reports in the Bidston Hill and Irby areas of Wirral.

In September the ECHO reported how a man was walking his dog on Whitefield Common when he claimed to have seen a "black, large cat" near the trees.

Jon Devoy reported the sighting to Puma Watch North Wales, a group set up to document sightings and raise awareness of suspected big cats.

He said: "I was walking the dog, didn’t suspect anything was up as the dog was acting as she usually does.

“I saw a large black silhouette in the tree line, perhaps the size of a fairly big dog. I stopped to get a better look and could see, fairly clearly, that it was a large cat.

“I know you’re meant to keep your cool in these situations so I slowly walked away while keeping my eye on it and it followed in the treeline.

“My dog was oblivious to the whole thing, fortunately, I was near the exit and so exited the park area and made it home safely.

“The experience was very frightening and I’ll be walking my dog in very residential areas from now on.

“I thought I was going mad as I didn’t think the UK had big cats but I googled and found this site which has vindicated me.”

Two weeks before, another person also claimed to have spotted a mysterious creature of a "big cat" description, just a two minutes walk from the place Jon claimed to see the recent sighting.

Previous sightings of big cats on the Wirral also include Willaston, Prenton, Bidston Hill and Burton Woods.
