Wirral coronavirus cases plummet

ACROSS Wirral coronavirus cases have plummeted, with particularly big falls in Birkenhead wards.

In the week up to November 20, Rock Ferry was the most infected ward in the borough with 40 virus cases.

But just 17 infections were recorded in the ward in the seven days up to November 27, a fall of more than 50%.

Claughton also saw a dip, from 21 cases to 12, while Prenton had just eight infections, down from 19 the week before.

Elsewhere in the borough, West Kirby registered just six Covid-19 cases in the seven days period, down from 30 the week before.

In South Wirral, Bromborough’s cases have more than halved from 28 to 12.

Just two wards saw a rise in their numbers.

Pensby and Thingwall now has 18 cases, up from nine last week, making it the most infected ward in the borough.

Bidston and St James has 12 infections, up from nine last week.

The stunning fall in cases for most areas is reflected in the overall numbers for Wirral, which recorded the seven days up to November 29.

In that period, 193 coronavirus cases were recorded in the borough at an infection rate of 60 per 100,000.

That is a massive fall on the 364 cases recorded at a rate of 112 per 100,000 in the previous week’s figures.

Infections have fallen across the Liverpool City Region, but there is evidence of a flattening of the curve in some boroughs.

In St Helens, the rate has fallen from 171 to 141 in the same week-by-week comparison, but the last two days of the week up to November 29 saw a small jump from 135 to 141.

Liverpool’s rate stands at 99, down on 150 seven days earlier, but the last two days of figures showed little change.

Yesterday, the city region began life in Tier 2 and the LDRS travelled to Liscard to see how busy things were following the end of the national lockdown.

There were some reports of queues.

Emma, from Wallasey, who did not want her surname revealed, said there had been big queues outside Primark and B&M.

But clear social distancing signs were in place and on the whole people were obeying the rules.
