Windows 10 search bar working again after mystery bug left it broken for entire day

MICROSOFT has fixed a mysterious bug that left Windows users unable to use their computer search function.

Confused Windows 10 users complained that the Windows Search bar had stopped working around the world for most of Wednesday.

The Search tool sits in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, and lets you find files, emails and other content on your computer.

But users say the tool was simply returning a blank box.

As many as 800million people use Windows 10 around the world, but it's not clear how many people were affected by the bug.

One potential fix involved disabling Bing in the Windows 10 Start Menu.

However, this is a relatively complicated fix and shouldn't be attempted by users who aren't tech-savvy.

Tech blog Windows Central has put together a guide on how to disable Bing in the Search bar.

Users flooded Reddit with complaints about the Search function.

"I seem to have gotten the same problem as well and on both of my laptops," said one frustrated user.

"The search just stopped working a couple hours ago seemingly out of nowhere. Curious to see how many more people are having this issue."

Windows 10 – the key facts

Here's what you need to know.

Another was so outraged by the issue that they threatened to bin Windows and switch to Apple's Mac computers instead.

"Same issue here, tried fixing for 2 hours. just started a few hours ago.

"Tried most fixes i could find on the web. nothing, send help. I'm honestly up to here with Windows update, might just switch to Mac."

The issue is so widespread that moderators on the Windows 10 Reddit forum have blocked users from making new posts about it.

"Given the volume of people reporting this in a short period of time, the issue is likely server side," said one moderator, blaming Microsoft for the issue.

The issue wasn't affecting all users however. We were able to get the Search box working in The Sun's London offices.

We've asked Microsoft for comment and will update this story with any response.

Introducing Windows 10 - the best Windows yet

In other news, a recent Windows 10 bug put 800million users at risk of being hacked.

Hackers recently hijacked a security camera in the bedroom of an eight-year-old girl – and tormented her with spooky noises.

And a new "sextortion" scam cooked up by cyber criminals aims to terrify victims into sending money by claiming to have recorded them watching porn.
