A plum new job is available at Kensington Palace -but candidates are warned they must be 'discreet'.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are seeking a trustworthy new housekeeper for the lavish home they share with their three children.

An advertisement posted by the royal household says the successful candidate will need to be able 'maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion'.

The salary for the plum royal role starts at £19,140 - and the housekeeper will be offered the chance to 'live-in' at the palace, with all meals and travel expenses provided.

They can also divide their living quarters across royal households.

The job advert says the housekeeper will be based mainly in either Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, but will also work across other royal residences from at least three months of the year. 

And they will need to have kept their passport up-to-date - as the position may require some travel abroad with the senior royals.

The vacant position is described as an 'exciting opportunity'. 

The ad reads: "This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and positive team. You will be a self-starter who also enjoys working collaboratively.

"You will be keen to take on new challenges as these arise and develop your own knowledge and skills."

Candidates with a 'commitment to learning new skills' and a 'willingness to tackle new challenges' are preferred.

And they will be able to undertake a Level 2 Housekeeping Apprenticeship on the job, where they will be supported by a mentor and a 13-month learning programme before joining the permanent team.

The housekeeper will be responsible for the 'upkeep and care of a wide range of interiors and items', and will help at functions and events, the advert continues.

Once fully-trained, the housekeeper is expected to keep up 'exceptional standards', and may even be required to step into a senior role to fill in where needed.
