Who is Raoul Moat’s ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart and what happened to her?

RAOUL Moat's shooting spree in 2010 left one dead and two left to suffer with the life changing affects of his actions.

Here, we look at Samantha Stobbart, who was shot by Moat in the incident which shocked the nation.

Who is Raoul Moat's ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart?

Samantha Stobbart had been in a six-year relationship with Moat prior to the attack.

The couple had a four-year-old daughter together, though trainee hairdresser Stobbart had started dating karate instructor Chris Brown while Moat was still in prison.

In an interview with the Daily Star in 2011, Samantha's sister Claire Burdis said the pair had met when they were just sixteen and were set up by school friends.

Ms Burdis claimed that Samantha had told Moat while he was in prison that she was dating a policeman as she was "terrified of Raoul" and wanted him to leave her alone - but this prompted Moat to want "vengeance".

Brown had moved to the area from Windsor, Berkshire, six months before the attack.

A court heard in 2011 that Moat had become obsessed with the fact that Ms Stobbart was seeing a new man after their relationship.

Moat also held a long grudge against cops, who he claimed had ruined his business.

What happened to her?

Moat, 37, shot ex-girlfriend Samantha, then 22, through the window of a friend's house, moments after killing her lover, Chris Brown, in a brutal attack in Birtley, Gateshead, on July 3.

She was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, where she was left fighting for her life.

On July 5, 2010, Samantha was declared to no longer be in a critical condition following the attack and left the hospital on July 17.

That same day she issued a direct appeal to Moat, who had gone on the run, and said: "Please give yourself up. If you still loved me and our baby you would not be doing this."

Moat had just been released from Durham Prison two days prior to the attack, following an 18-week sentence for assault.

The day after the initial shooting, the gunman shot and blinded PC David Rathband, 44, as he sat in his patrol car in Newcastle.

It prompted a week-long manhunt, before Moat blasted himself in the head after a six-hour stand-off with armed police in Rothbury, Northumberland, at 1.12am on July 10, 2010.

Samantha told Newcastle Crown Court in 2011 that Moat had a "Jekyll and Hyde split personality", and was prone towards violent behaviour.

A brand new documentary focusing on the events named Manhunt is set to air on ITV on the evening of July 9.

What has she said about the shooting?

Samantha told the News of The World in 2010 of the terrifying moment when Moat appeared at the window and started to shoot.

She said: "There was nothing I could do against a madman with a gun.

"I had to get back to the house to make sure my baby daughter Chanel was safe.

"I saw the sparks flying off Raoul's gun as he shot me.

"Then I was on the floor with blood pumping out everywhere."

Samantha added that "there was no emotion" in Moat's eyes as he carried out the attack.

She told the Daily Mirror in 2012: "Without my daughter, I wouldn’t have lasted this long.

“I have never had counselling. I don’t want to talk about it – it just brings it all back. The whole thing made me realise how quickly things can go wrong in just a few seconds.

“And if you think like that, the world is a pretty scary place.”

Where is Samantha Stobbart now?

Not a lot is known about her whereabouts nowadays, but she remains suffering from the effects of the shooting whilst raising her daughter.

The Hunt For Raoul Moat is a three-part series about the shooting spree, first airing on ITV1 on April 16, 2023.

Kelly Stobbart, Samantha’s sister, has slammed the new documentary due to the impact it will have on the family.

She told The Mirror: “ 'I'm so sick of hearing Raoul's name and I'm so sick of him being on TV. I hate seeing his face on social media and then having to read all the comments people make about Sam. My whole family and I all feel that it should be left in the past.“
