AN EVIL Danish inventor and entrepreneur caged for murdering and mutilating a journalist has tried to escape jail.
Twisted Peter Madsen brutally murdered Swedish journalist Kim Wall when she visited him on his homemade submarine to research a story. He attempted to flee from Herstedvester Prison on the outskirts of Copenhagen.
Who is Peter Madsen?
Inventor Peter Madsen was the skipper of the UC3 Nautilus, a private submarine he designed and built in 2008.
Born in 1971, Madsen grew up in the small town of Saeby, 100km west of Copenhagen.
His parents divorced when he was six and Madsen went to live with his father, whom he has described as authoritarian and violent.
Aged 15, he started his first company, Danish Space Academy, to buy spare parts to build a rocket.
He studied engineering, but quit the course once he thought he knew enough to build submarines and rockets.
In 2008, he launched the Nautilus, the biggest privately made submarine whose ownership was later transferred to him after a row with former colleagues.
Around the same time, he developed his idea for private space travel.
In June 2011, he successfully launched a rocket from a floating platform on the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm.
Why did he murder Swedish journalist Kim Wall?
The 47-year-old was found guilty of murdering Swedish journalist Kim Wall on board his UC3 Nautilus submarine in August 2017.
He was convicted of premeditated murder and sexual assault after previously admitting to dismembering Ms Wall's body on the submarine and throwing her remains overboard.
Kim Wall, 30, was a journalist from Sweden who went missing on August 10, 2017.
She was last seen on Madsen’s homemade submarine, which she boarded at the Bay of Køge, Denmark, for a feature on the 40-tonne craft.
According to prosecutors, Madsen invited Ms Wall on to his miniature submarine so he could fulfil the most vile and violent of sexual fantasies.
They allege he brought a saw, knife and sharpened screwdrivers to the vessel where he invited Ms Wall to conduct an interview.
Prosecutors also argued that Madsen strangled or beheaded his victim after torturing her.
An indictment claims he stabbed her several times, cutting off her head and limbs before throwing her body parts into the sea.
Madsen admitted dismembering his victim in the bathroom of the vessel after she died accidentally on board but refused to go into detail because it was "so horrible".
He told a court in Copenhagen that he thought of 1995 hit Se7en as he cut off Wall's head - adding that he didn't think there was anything "unusual" about that.
How did Peter Madsen escape prison?
Peter Madsen is reported to have threatened guards on October 20, 2020, by claiming he was carrying a bomb during his attempted escape.
He was also brandishing a "pistol-like object", says Expressen.
Madsen managed to flee 400-500 metres from Herstedvester Prison, add local reports.
Armed police dashed to the scene in Albertslund, and a road was blocked off, preventing the killer from fleeing the prison complex.
Video footage shows him sitting in front of a hedge in Albertslund, with a belt-like object around his stomach while surrounded by cops and their dogs.
Negotiators, a bomb squad and snipers were also summoned.
Citing an unnamed source, Ekstra Bladet reports that Madsen has previously been in isolation due to suspicion over his escape plans.
What has Madsen said about Vlad the Impaler and Dracula?
During his trial, Madsen admitted being fascinated with Vlad the Impaler after a court played a number of videos found on his hard drive and phone – each contained images of women being tortured.
The hearing in Copenhagen was shown three short films of women being decapitated, which prosecutors believe were viewed by the sicko in the days before his fatal voyage with Ms Wall.
One animated video showed a woman dancing, removing her clothes, having her throat cut and her head chopped off - Madsen denied seeing the video.
Asked if he was especially interested in Count Dracula and vampires he replied: "Yes, and in another one known as the Impaler."

Is Peter Madsen married?
Madsen reportedly had an open marriage, with some of his ex-girlfriends telling reporters that he was into sado-masochism and erotic asphyxiation.
Others have described him as an erratic person who had spats with former colleagues and an interest in violent porn.
It has been claimed that Madsen texted his ex-wife, whose name has not been disclosed, just 20 minutes after Ms Wall’s death.
His ex-wife has allegedly visited him in prison to finalise their divorce, but “since then, they have not had any contact”, according to local media reports.
