Who is Greenville Riverside High School coach Eric Cummings and how did he die?

GREENVILLE Riverside High School coach Eric Cummings died on Tuesday.

The cross country coach had been placed on administrative leave for the Greenville County school district on September 3 for unknown reasons.

Who is Greenville Riverside High School coach Eric Cummings? 

Eric Cummings was the cross country coach at Greenville Riverside High School in Greer, South Carolina.

He had coached the Riverside Warriors for 14 seasons, beginning in 2006, and won five girls and two boys state team championships.

Cummings had also been a coach at Spartanburg Methodist College for four years and at Byrnes High for five. 

While there he led the team to win the 2000 and 2001 Class AAAA state championships.

The coach was awarded the 2017 national cross country coach of the year award and the 2016 South Carolina cross country coach of the year award. 

How did he die?

Cummings passed away on Tuesday for unknown reasons, according to Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger.

His cause of death is being investigated and Clevenger said he is awaiting the results of the autopsy report. 

Clevenger does not suspect foul play and told the Greenville News that he is “not being told anyone else is responsible for his death.”

What was the investigation? 

Cummings had been placed on administrative leave on September 3 for the Greenville County school district for unknown reasons.

Greenville County Schools spokesperson Tim Waller confirmed that there is a pending investigation regarding the leave.

Sergeant Chris Forrester of the Greer Police Department is not releasing any information to the public about Cummings' leave until the investigation closes.

What did the Coaches Association say about his death?

The South Carolina Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association released a statement about Cumming’s death saying: "The South Carolina Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association is saddened to hear of the passing of Eric Cummings, SCTCCCA Hall of Famer and current treasurer. 

"Our condolences go out to the Cummings family and the Riverside High School Cross Country program in this difficult time. 

"Both the Cummings family and the Riverside High School community will be in the thoughts and prayers of coaches across the state of South Carolina during this difficult time," the SCTCCCA statement read.
