White woman whose accusation led to Emmett Till lynching will not be prosecuted

A Grand Jury in Mississippi refused to indict the accuser of Emmett Till, a black boy who was lynched in 1955.

Carolyn Bryant her Donham will not be charged for her role. Regarding Till's death, Lefleur County District Attorney Dwayne Richardson said Tuesday that Donham was 21 when the lynching took place. Currently she is 87 years old.

Jurors reportedly heard more than seven hours of testimony from investigators and witnesses. They determined there was not enough evidence to charge her with either her kidnapping or manslaughter.

Donham alleged that her 14-year-old Till touched her and sexually assaulted her. I accused him of seducing me.

Till, who was living in Chicago and visiting relatives in Mississippi, was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by Donham's then-husband Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W.

An all-white jury found Bryant and Milam not guilty of Till's murder, but both later confessed to the murder. was found three days after his death in the Tallahatchie River, weighted down on a large metal fan.

His mother, Mamie Till Mobley, decided to hold her son's funeral in a public coffin. Thousands saw his tortured body firsthand. . The discovery sparked new calls for her arrest, some 70 years after the warrant was written.

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch refused to reopen the case for lack of new evidence.
