Based on Stephanie Land's bestselling memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive, Maid on Netflix is set to bring the female protagonist sub-genre into the television and streaming space.

The 10-episode drama created, co-written and executive produced by Molly Smith Metzler - whose resume includes Shameless and Orange is the New Black - brings to life Land's real and personal tale of her time working as a maid to provide for her young daughter while dealing with the systemic injustices faced by those who live below the poverty line.

Margaret Qualley

Most familiar to audiences for her role as Pussycat on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Margaret Qualley was announced as the lead of the show back in August 2020. Qualley broke out with her performance as Jill Garvey in HBO's The Leftovers before going on to make appearances on HBO TV movie Native Son and FX's Fosse/Verdon.

Andie MacDowell

Marking the first actual mother and daughter will play a fictional mother and daughter duo on screen, Qualley’s mother and Four Weddings and A Funeral actress Andie MacDowell will portray Paula, the mother of Qualley’s character Alex.

Nick Robinson

Nick Robinson was cast in the lead role opposite Qualley. The Love, Simon and Melissa & Joey star reunites with Qualley after starring in Rashid Johnson-directed HBO film Native Son, which premiered last year at Sundance.

Anika Noni Rose

Best known as the voice of Disney's first African-American movie protagonist Tiana, Anika Noni Rose,will play Regina, an extremely successful family law attorney and Alex’s client.

Billy Burke

Burke who played Charlie Swan in Twilight, Cesaire in Red Riding Hood and Miles Matheson in NBC science-fiction series Revolution was announced in role of Hank, the father of Alex (Qualley) and the ex-husband of Paula (MacDowell), from whom he is estranged.

Tracy Vilar

House fame Tracy Vilar joins the cast as Yolanda, the owner of Value Maids - the cleaning business that eventually employs Alex.

Vilar also played Ro-Ro on CBS sitcom Partners, Sophia Ortiz on The WB sitcom The Steve Harvey Show, and Angela de la Cruz on the TNT television show, Saved.

BJ Harrison

BJ Harrison who is known for her role in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is also part of the stellar cast.

She has been touted to play the role of Denise.

When does Maid release on Netflix UK?

Maid is set to begin streaming on Netflix on Friday, October 1.

What is Maid about?

According to Netflix, Maid follows the raw and inspiring story of Alex (Qualley), a single mother who turns to housecleaning in order to make ends meet as she escapes an abusive relationship and overcomes homelessness to create a better life for her daughter, Maddy. Alex is the fictionalised version of Land.

Is there a trailer?

The official teaser which dropped in late August offered audiences a preview of the drama by introducing protagonist as she shares the synopsis of a story she's writing.

It sees her narrate the story of a woman living a life of leisure. In reality, we see that she is caught living below the poverty line, a struggle that will be explored in greater depth as the series progresses.
