Every year in November, the sky is lit up with amazing fireworks displays as people in the UK celebrate Guy Fawkes Night – more colloquially known as Bonfire Night.
We celebrate it annually as a way of remembering when conspirator Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up Parliament while King James I was there as retaliation for the King’s persecution of Roman Catholics.

November 5 is the first Saturday in November, so you can expect most fireworks displays and other activities like fairs and bonfires to take place either on the actual Saturday, or spread out from Friday 4 to Sunday 6.

Bonfire Night displays in London
The annual Alexandra Palace fireworks are always a spectacle.
One of the top Bonfire Night events in London, the activities on offer at Ally Pally’s fireworks include a German beer festival, music from Gok Wan MBE, an ice disco and a dazzling light show. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, November 5.

On Friday November 4, Wimbledon Park will also put on a great display.
Featuring pyrotechnics and fireworks for a dramatic show, Wimbledon Park’s event will also feature rides and a variety of food stalls for snacks.

Battersea Power Station will also be running two nights of events over November 5 and 6.
Tuck into food and drink from the restaurants and bars at nearby Battersea Power Station, before enjoying the Battersea fireworks display on the banks of the river Thames. Pick between Bonfire Night on 5 November or Family Night on 6 November, which has an earlier start.

Bonfire nights across England
Lewes in Sussex has probably the most famous of all bonfire night events in England, as it notably burns religious and cultural effigies.
Previous years’ bonfires have included effigies of Luftwaffe bombers and Viking longboats, as well as a number of politicians and popes. There is also the striking image of the 17 burning crosses to represent the burning of martyrs of Lewes back in the 16th Century.

If you’re up north, there’s plenty of big shows to choose from.
Leeds Castle which is in Kent, not Leeds, puts on what is thought to be the biggest pyrotechnic show in the South East of England.
