What is Tiger King on Netflix about?

PEOPLE can't stop talking about new controversial Netflix show Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.

The life of wild animal man Joe Exotic has be thrown fully into the spotlight, and here's why...

What is Tiger King on Netflix about?

Tiger King is the insane true crime story about Joe Exotic.

The seven-episode series is directed by Eric Goode who also features in the documentary.

He is a wildcat enthusiast who owned numerous tigers, lions and other large animals that he kept at the G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma.

But this isn't just what the series is about.

The series focuses on Joe’s undying hatred for animal rights activist Carole Baskin - something which in the end will see him end up in jai.

The pair have a mutual disdain for one another, with both hellbent on taking the other one down.

This hate campaign on both sides takes over their lives.

Joe accuses Carole of murdering her husband and feeding him to her own collection of wild cats.

But his loathing for her takes a much darker turn when he pays a hitman to bump her off.

In addition to Joe and Carole's story we also meet a bizarre cast of real-life characters and scandals.

This includes another big cat owner who is accused of running a cult, and a drug lord who says he may have inspired Scarface.

Joe Exotic is of course the main focus and underlying narrative of this documseries.

His real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage and he is a self-proclaimed “gay, gun-toting cowboy with a mullet”.

He started his career in exotic animals after he purchased a pet store with settlement funds after his brother, Garold Wayne, died in a car accident.

He then opened and operated a big cat exhibit called the G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma in his late brother’s honour.

The G.W. Zoo gained popularity in the early 2000s, with tourists coming for photo ops with Joe’s lions - we even see Shaquille O'Neal meeting him at the zoo.

However, Joe’s tiger breeding made him a target for animal activist groups, including Carole Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue - which ended up seeing Joe bankrupt and in jail.

In 2014, Joe married John Finlay AND 19-year-old Travis Maldonado, though many questioned the legitimacy of the union.

Joe's name may also be familiar because in addition to his animal work, he also attempted television and political careers.

He unsuccessfully ran for President in 2016 and governor of Oklahoma in 2018.
