The infamous Who Wants To Be A Millionaire cheating scandal of 2001 is now firmly back in the public eye thanks to a repeat of hit ITV drama Quiz.
Back at the turn of the millennium, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, or Cash Mountain as it was initially known, was the biggest game show on the planet, but Major Charles Ingram, his wife Diana and accomplice Tecwen Whittock, dared to take it on in an extremely corrupt manner as they cheated their way to £1million.
Following in the footsteps of Diana, Charles answered questions in the Millionaire hot seat and won the coveted cash prize thanks to coughs made during the recording to signify the correct answers to the multiple choice questions posed to the Major by Millionaire host Chris Tarrant.
After playback tapes unearthed the tactical coughing, an investigation was swiftly launched by ITV, who had previously been alerted to it by a sound technician working on the show, and the Ingrams and Whittock ended up standing trial for deception and were punished with suspended prison sentences and hefty fines.
What happened to Charles Ingram's winnings on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
Concerns about the tactical coughing were actually raised before Charles Ingram won the jackpot but Paul Smith, CEO of Celador, the production company responsible for Millionaire, decided to press ahead with filming after discussions with producer David Briggs.
After Charles Ingram won the £1million, the cheque was held for eight days to be processed, but after Smith discovered blatant cheating had taken place, he called the police and de-authorised payment of the cheque to Ingram.
In episode 2 of Quiz, viewers saw Ingram return a phone call from Smith in which he told him he had suspicions about his win and that the police had been contacted. The episode also saw wife Diana ring the number back, convinced it was all a windup, before the penny dropped.
