Veterans sue Ministry of Defence over phoney war crimes claims in Iraq

VETERANS are suing the MoD over phoney war crimes claims in Iraq.

Military Cross hero Brian Wood, wrongly accused of murder, says lives were ruined by false allegations.

More than 4,000 war probes collapsed because of lack of evidence.

A group of heroes accuse the MoD of failing in its duty of care by not throwing out cases and hanging veterans out to dry.

Sgt Wood, leading the landmark action, said: “False accusations have ruined people’s lives.

“The system is broken and it needs to be fixed.”

The father of two won a Military Cross for gallantry after storming a trench when his convoy was ambushed in 2004.

He was later accused of killing prisoners and mutilating their bodies.

It took five years for a judge to exonerate him.

An inquiry found the claims were based on “deliberate lies”.

Several cases were brought by tank-chasing lawyers such as disgraced solicitor Phil Shiner, struck off for dishonesty in 2017.

Sgt Wood, who served in the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, told The Sun: “Coming to terms with what happens in war is hard enough without that betrayal thrown into the mix.

"I love the Army, it made me who I am, but the MoD failed in its duty of care.”

Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer vowed to reform investigations.

He added: “I hold top brass responsible for waving this process through over the years.”

Solicitor Hilary Meredith, representing Sgt Wood and 20 fellow vets, said: “We are bringing this case to stop it happening again.”

The MoD has been contacted for comment.
