Vermont Democrats seek Senate seats

Vermont voters elected Rep. Peter Welch in Tuesday'sDemocraticprimary, replacing Sen. retired. The last of Congress' so-called Watergate babies. Welch,

state's only representative, easily defeated two of his lesser-known candidates to advance to the November general election. During the years he was in Congress, Welch was one of Vermont's voters and would likely win the general election.

Incumbent Republican Governor Phil Scott also won the party's primary, defeating two candidates in his bid for his fourth term. The only candidate for the Democratic nomination is New Fein activist Brenda Siegel. Last fall, she slept 27 nights on the steps of the Vermont State Capitol, highlighting the state's homelessness problem.

Her two leading Republican candidates vying to face off against Welch in the Senate race are Vermont's former U.S. Attorney Christina Her Nolan and a retired U.S. Army officer. Gerald Malloy.

Vermont is considered one of the most liberal states in the country, but he believes both can win seats. Republicans have not represented Washington state since 2001, when the late Senator Jim Jeffers left the Republican Party for independence, switching control of the Senate from Republicans to Democrats.

Welch's decision to run for a seat in the Senate opened his seat in the House of Representatives. For the first time since 2006, there were vacancies in his three congressional delegations in Vermont. The Democratic frontrunners are Lieutenant Molly Gray and Becca Balint, a pro-tempore speaker of the state Senate.

In deep blue Vermont, the winner of the Democratic House primary is likely to easily win his November, a blemish on the liberal state's reputation of being only represented by white men. Obliterate what is seen.

These two of hers share a similar policy view. Gray is the centrist candidate backed by the state's Democratic establishment, which includes Leahy and former Democratic governors Howard Dean and Madeleine Cnin. Balint supports progressives in Vermont's party, including national progressive leaders such as Vermont independent Senator Bernie Sanders and Congressional Progressive Party Caucus Chairman Pramila Jayapal. I've been Balint campaigned with Sanders late last month.

The two Republican congressional candidates are Erika Reddick, from Burlington, and Liam Madden, a Marine veteran from Bellows Falls.

If elected, Reddick, she said, will focus on combating inflation, illegal immigration, drug abuse and government overreach, especially on mandating vaccines.

Madden, a nontraditional candidate in the Republican primary, says he is an independent. He said he had considered withdrawing the nomination if he won. It has worked to make the state more affordable and to attract more people to the state to combat the trend of an aging population. A shrinking workforce and fewer school-aged children.
