And other stories from the stranger side of life
Health food chain Holland & Barrett has launched a range of vegetable-shaped sex toys. The £16.95 vibrators offer “guilt-free pleasure”, according to the store. Among the range are silicone corn on the cobs, chilli peppers, carrots, bananas and aubergines. One customer insisted she bought one by accident, thinking it an actual vegetable. “I soon realised this was a whole other ball game,” she said, “but I decided to make the most of this monster and I can honestly say it was the best experience of my life.”
Hot dogs and jam among guilty pleasures
A study has found that 80% of British people have a secret guilty food pleasure, including hot dogs and jam, fries and pickles, and even tea and coffee in the same cup. Other oddities found by the researchers were ham marinated in cola, salad with cold baked beans and dry, buttered Weetabix. The researchers said that secrecy around treats increases the feeling of fulfilment in those who devour them.
Britain’s largest model railway creator named
The owner of Britain’s largest model railway track said he “didn't really plan for it to be the biggest” despite spending eight years and a quarter of a million pounds on the project. Simon George, 53, has built his railway in the basement of a Wakefield industrial unit. The model is a recreation of a 1.5-mile stretch of real track at Heaton Lodge Junction in Mirfield in 1983. He said it was an “eccentric way of reliving my past”.
