But a foreign minister who compares herself to Margaret Thatcher will have to face the Joe Biden administration from the standpoint of prime minister in an important diplomatic conversation.

She is already recognized as a "supporter" of her predecessor, Boris Johnson, according to a US diplomat familiar with British files.

A diplomat who spoke with Politico said Truss "is likely to carry on the policies and tone of the Johnson administration," and is expected to produce positive results in the first step of building the relationship.{33

The diplomat went on to suggest that the tone of the conversation was "unlikely to change" regardless of who took over at Downing Street.

But in a second phase, the two governments will have to negotiate Brexit and their relationship with the UK. According to diplomats, this will be a "big test".

The diplomat predicted that "the question of how the Truss government will approach the [NI] Protocol will be the first major test of the relationship."

On Wednesday, Truss said she was determined to introduce the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill in full, even if she faced lengthy opposition in Parliament.

Politico suggested that the Protocol dispute "pits the domestic base of the Truss against its greatest ally", since the Truss' intentions to rewrite the Protocol are clear.
