A pedestrian has been run over by a police car during chaotic scenes at a street race in the US.

Footage of the incident has gone viral as crowds gathered for a car meet in Tacoma, Washington.

The police car is said to have been surrounded during the event as people banged on the windows of the officer's SUV.

Footage from the scene shows the car drive forward as dozens of people run and a person is seen on the ground.

Tacoma police spokeswoman Wendy Haddow said she believed one person fell as the SUV moved forward and was run over.

One person has been taken to hospital with minor injuries, reports local news site Kiro 7.

Several other people were reportedly knocked down during the chaos.

The officer stopped a short distance away and called the incident in, Haddow said.

Police were called to the meet with reports of up to 100 people in attendance as cars blocked the intersection and performed burnouts and doughnuts.

Video footage from the scene has been widely shared on social media.

One clip showed a man under a police SUV before the car drove away.

A second clip showed a car doing doughnuts before officers were called to the scene.

One eyewitness, called Mark, told The News Tribune he saw "five to six cars spinning in circles" as traffic came to a standstill and crowds gathered.

A fire engine had temporarily stopped the street race earlier in the evening before the racers started again.

In a 48-second clip sirens are heard as a police car appears to reverse before suddenly accelerating into the crowd.

Other videos shared on social media show the vehicle drive over a young man on the ground.

Mark said: "A lot of people swarmed in that direction (of the police car). They were intending to block him."
