US coronavirus cases smash daily record AGAIN as 91,000 fall ill with Covid – just six days after last peak

THE US on Thursday surpassed its previous record of new daily coronavirus cases, logging more than 91,000 diagnoses.

In the 24 hours leading up to 8:30pm, the US recorded 91,295 new Covid-19 cases, according to a real-time count by Johns Hopkins University.

Coronavirus cases have surged in the US in recent weeks, and it has now tallied at least 8.94 million cases, far more than any other country in the world.

The US has averaged more than 75,000 new Covid-19 cases per day over the past week, according to The New York Times.

In addition, eight states on Thursday reported hitting daily records for new infections.

One of the first states to experience a hike in coronavirus cases this fall, Wisconsin, recorded more than 200 deaths in the past week.

“There is no way to sugarcoat it: We are facing an urgent crisis, and there is an imminent risk to you, your family members, your friends, your neighbors,” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said.

The number of new cases is rising in 42 states.

Nearly half of the states, 21, saw more Covid-19 cases in the seven-day stretch ending on Wednesday than the same time frame at any other point since the pandemic began in March.

In North Dakota, more than 5 percent of the entire states’s population has tested positive, the greatest percentage of any state.

Meanwhile, northeastern states that had controlled the spread, including New Jersey and Rhode Island, are seeing an increase in infections.

This week, Idaho Governor Brad Little mandated new restrictions on gatherings and businesses in an attempt to avoid overwhelming the state’s hospital system.

“Hospitals throughout the state are quickly filling up or are already full with Covid-19 patients and other patients, and way too many health care workers are out sick with Covid-19,” Little said.

Daily death figures are also rising but remain far lower than peaks in the spring, averaging 780 per day.

President Donald Trump, who held a campaign rally in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday—five days before the election—has claimed that the coronavirus is vanishing.

By contrast, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has put forth a "national mask mandate" idea.
