Unsolved Mysteries fans left ‘crying their eyes out’ at footage of grieving parents from 2011 Tsunami

UNSOLVED Mysteries fans have been left ‘crying their eyes out’ at footage of grieving parents from the 2011 Tsunami.

The fourth episode of season two of the Netflix series looks at the devastation and aftermath of the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011, claiming more than 18,000 lives.

The coastal Tohoku region and the seaside town of Ishinomaki bore the brunt of the devastation, and in the years that have followed, locals have reported hundreds of ghostly sightings in the area.

Survivors share their harrowing stories in the episode, leaving many viewers in tears.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: "Crying over the Tsunami Spirits episode of #UnsolvedMysteries. All that loss and grief."

Another tweeted: "Omg I’m crying this man lost his whole family #UnsolvedMysteries."

A third added: "I wasn't prepared for the 2011 tsumani episode of #UnsolvedMysteries. I found it difficult to breathe from crying too much. I am devastated."

Meanwhile a fourth shared: "Omfg this poor woman lost her 19mo old son who she said was a miracle because she thought she couldn’t have kids. I’m crying #UnsolvedMysteries."

Many locals used exorcist Kansho Aizawa after seeing the ghosts, and shared their stories with Buddhist priest Taio Kaneda, who says in the episode that they don't see the ghosts as something to be feared.

He explained: "They appear because they love you and long for you.

"If you see ghosts again, tell them, 'You are dead. There’s a world for you to go to. We will remain to make sure we revive our relationship to this city. Do not worry about us.'"

The series also looks at five other new cases including the death of Jack Wheeler, a man found dead from blunt force trauma on New Year’s Eve 2010, and a woman found dead in her Oslo hotel room in 1995.

Unsolved Mysteries seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix now.
