University students WILL be able to go home for Xmas — but some must isolate first

HOME FOR XMAS

UNIVERSITY students will be able to return home for Christmas — but may have to stay locked in their dorms for two weeks before they travel.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson promised undergraduates they will all be reunited with their parents.

But he warned students in Covid hotspots may have to self-isolate before being allowed to return.

He told MPs: “We are going to work with universities to make sure that all students are supported to return home safely and spend Christmas with their loved ones.”

Mr Williamson was hammered by MPs on all sides about the university shambles.

Thousands of unhappy students are locked up on campus, barred from leaving their rooms — even for food — by patrolling security guards.

Tory backbencher Sir Edward Leigh said: “We cannot destroy the life chances of the young.”

DUP MP Sammy Wilson lashed the “climate of fear” whipped up by ministers and demanded students get some of their £9,000 a year fees back.

Labour MP Rushanara Ali branded Mr Williamson’s handling of the education chaos a “dog’s breakfast” and demanded testing for students is ramped up.

Meanwhile, stats showed the number of secondary schools partially closed due to Covid outbreaks has doubled in a week.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson vows that 'every student will be able to spend Christmas with their family'
