Under-fire Vardys will flee UK after Wagatha trial as Wayne Rooney brands Jamie a ‘bottler’ for not taking witness stand

EMBATTLED Rebekah Vardy will quit the UK with footballer husband Jamie in the wake of her disastrous Wagatha Christie libel trial.

The couple plan a move to the US regardless of the result.

A source said of Rebekah: “She’s keen to be out of the country as fast as possible.”

Wayne Rooney also furiously branded Jamie Vardy a “bottler” as the former England team-mates’ Wagatha Christie fallout erupted again.

Three Lions legend Rooney claimed the Leicester City striker chickened out of giving evidence himself in court.

A source told The Sun: “Wayne feels Jamie bottled it by not going on to the witness stand and saying what he wanted to say under oath.

“That way he could have been cross-examined like Wayne was on the truth of what he was saying.

“Instead he just said whatever he wanted outside court and disappeared with Becky — who the court was later told felt unwell.”

Rooney told the hearing that he had asked Vardy to get his spouse to “calm down” during Euro 2016 amid concerns from then-manager Roy Hodgson that she was becoming a distraction.

He said: “Mr Vardy had a can of Red Bull and I had a coffee and I remember the conversation I had with him because it was such an awkward moment.”

Giving evidence on Tuesday in support of wife Coleen, he insisted under cross-examination: “I’m sat here under oath. I, 100 per cent, spoke to Mr Vardy. I don’t know if he told his wife or not.”

However Vardy, staring at him from a few yards away, then issued a statement outside court claiming “Wayne is talking nonsense” and suggested his former skipper “must be confused”.

The Vardys left the hearing after Rooney’s 28-minute stint in the witness box and proceedings were paused yesterday ahead of the lawyers’ closing speeches today.

Sources close to Jamie and Rebekah — who brought the case but has appeared upset and emotional on several occasions — say the couple are now plotting a move to the States.

A source said: “The trial has been a total disaster, and really miserable for the family. She’s mortified.

"They’ve been planning an American move for a while behind the scenes, and now it would be the perfect escape after everything that has gone on. She wants out fast.

“Win or lose she comes out of this dreadfully and it’s all clearly been a terrible mistake.

“She never wants to be part of the British Wag scene again — she’s keen to be out of the country as fast as possible.”

Her husband, expected to line up against Chelsea tonight, has been in scintillating goal-scoring form since the trial began and has a contract with Leicester until 2023.

'FRESH START'

However he has invested in Rochester NY FC — a New York State-based Major League Soccer club — which could see him playing out the final part of his stellar career across the Atlantic.

The source went on: “Jamie has a contract in place still so they will have to work around that. But they’re in agreement America is their next home as soon as it makes practical sense.

“He’s still playing well and it will depend on football, but it’s going to happen. Becky will be delighted to be out of the country and making a fresh start with all the Wagatha stuff behind her.”

The mother of five chose to bring the trial after Coleen, 36, claimed stories about her had been leaked to the Press from her former pal’s Instagram account.

But she has faced a barrage of criticism for taking it to court, with many commentators suggesting her reputation has been tarnished irreparably regardless of the result.

She is suing Coleen for “substantial damages”.

The trial continues.
