UK weather forecast – Britain to be lashed with torrential rain in weekend washout to end mini-heatwave

THIS weekend is set to be a washout after Brits have been enjoying the driest May in 150.

Forecasters have predicted temperatures will plunge and the weather will remain "unsettled" for the first two weeks of June.

Met Office forecaster Martin Boles said: "It's quite a change from the blistering heat of the last week or so.

"Temperatures have also dropped quite dramatically. It's going to remain like this for the next few days.

"It will feel significantly cooler and there will be the odd shower or two."

Thursday will be a cloudy day with a cool northerly breeze with most areas seeing one or two showers.

Friday and into the weekend will be filled with showers with heavy rain in the north and eastern parts of the country.

It is expected to be windy with gales possible in coastal regions.

Worried water firms were thrilled after the driest May in England since records began in 1862 saw just 9mm of rain.

It was also one of the direst Springs ever known - sparking fears of a Summer hosepipe ban.

Customers were urged to avoid using sprinklers and hoses and to stop filling paddling pools amid a surge in demand.

Yorkshire Water asked people to take a four minute-shower instead of a bath to save on supplies.

South East Water issued an alert to its 2.2million customers urging them to cut down.
And United Utilities, which serves seven million homes, applied for a drought order to sustain supplies in West Cumbria.

But experts reckon it will have little impact on the water levels of Britain's dried-out reservoirs.

Christine McGourty, chief executive of Water UK, which represents water companies, said: "We’re seeing truly incredible surges of demand.

"People's patterns of using water have changed with the weather - and more people at home because of Covid."

Pictures of Howden Reservoir in Derbyshire captured its large basin dried out under the continuous baking sun.

It is usually filled with over 1.9m gallons of water - but capacity levels plummeted over the course of May.

Temperatures for the rest of the month are likely to be "above average".
