A UK punter turned a £31 bet on Australian racing into more than £10,000.

The Ladbrokes customer, from the London area, put a 50p each-way Lucky 31 on five selections last Saturday.

They were all competing at Randwick Racecourse on a card which featured the Group One TJ Smith Stakes, worth A$2,500,000.

At the track just 5km from the centre of Sydney, four of the punter's horses won.

He missed out on potentially a much bigger return as his fifth selection was a non-runner.

First to strike for the bet was 25/1 shot Entente, who won the Group Three Quincy Seltzer Carbine Club Stakes by a head.

Godolphin's filly Colette (6/5f) made it a hat-trick of wins as the shortest-priced selection and was swiftly followed by 15/2 shot Raheen House 40 minutes later.

The six-year-old was trained in Britain last summer and scored on his third start for Kris Lees.

The final horse in the bet, King's Legacy (11/1), took the Group One ATC Sires' Produce Stakes by half-a-length.

A son of Redoute’s Choice, the two-year-old fetched $1.4 million as a yearling and he gave Hugh Bowman his fourth win in the last six runnings of the race.

The Lucky 31, struck on the same day as the Virtual Grand National watched by 4.8 million people, returned £10,898.80.

Ladbrokes spokeswoman Nicola McGeady said: "With no racing on in Britain or Ireland, this customer turned his attention to the international stage.
